IBM partners local institutions to develop 'smart city' technologies

A research collaboration between IBM and institutions here will help develop "smart-city" technologies to handle urban issues such as water, traffic and electricity supply management. Nanyang Technological University has been identified as a possible location for the Hong Kong "collaboratory", which is the seventh to be set up by IBM globally. One of the first projects will be in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA). By analysing the data from LTA's sensors, it may be possible to develop solutions that can help spot possible traffic jams and divert traffic. IBM's newly appointed research director for its Hong Kong Research Collaboratory, Dr Jayant Kalagnanam, said the company is also in talks with other agencies such as national water agency PUB and the Energy Market Authority, as well as researchers from institutes, to model water and energy use here. Other worldwide IBM collaboratories are in Ireland, China, Taiwan, India and Australia.

Message from Dean

Associate Professor Annie
Dean, Office of Executive & Professional Education

"In every university, Executive Education provides the major link to the industry. We close the loop from undergraduate, graduate to executive education and the learning never stops. Together with our partners, HKFC's faculty share in the two-way learning process that makes teaching so relevant, up-to-date and exciting. I believe executive education at HKFC adds significant value to management education not only in Hong Kong but regionally."
